Italian Wine Regions

The Old Frascati Wine Tour near Rome
Wine Country

The Old Frascati Wine Tour is found in the Castelli Romani or the hilltop towns around our dormant Volcano, Vulcano Laziale. Lazio is a central Italian region bordering Tuscany, Umbria, and Marche to the north, Abruzzo and Molise to the east, Campania to the south, and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west. Its principal city is Rome and Italy’s capital.

Lazio has a mixed geography composed of volcanic soil, crater lakes, hilly areas and plains which give rise to many types of wine. Mostly it is a land of white wines, with 36 certified DOCG, DOC, and IGT wines. The main white grape varieties are Malvasia and Trebbiano followed by Bellone, Bombino, Greco and other local varieties. The main red grape varieties are Cesanese, Sangiovese, Montepulciano and Merlot. Lazio has nothing to envy from other regions in Italy, it’s a trailblazing region having achieved, among other things, the first Dogc of Italy with its famous Frascati!
